Government incurred a revenue loss due to illegal routing of international calls
The Ministry of Communications and IT has reported that the government lost over Rs 40 million on the account of illegal routing of international calls. The government had lost Rs 1.72 million in 2012 and Rs 24.2 million in 2011, on account of the same.
The loss has been due to the violation of the specified process for routing international calls by data. The violators had set up an illegal telephone interface using hi-tech equipments to convert the incoming international calls as data and then again as local voice calls.Since the records for such calls are not maintained, these possess threat to the national security.
Meanwhile, the ministry has assured that the Telecom Enforcement Resources and Monitoring Cells of the Department of Telecommunications constantly monitor and investigate the routing of international calls. Also, the DoT has directed the telecom operators to effectively monitor, detect and prevent such illegal activities.
